While admitting that Schopenhauer's insights are sometimes quite accurate, I have difficulty taking completely seriously someone who was so antisocial. Furthermore, his writings indicate that he was quite misogynistic. From my AI query:

"Difficulties with Friendship:

Socially Unpleasant: He was known for being arrogant, sarcastic, and unapproachable, which alienated many.

Intellectual Conflicts: His sharp tongue often ended friendships, even with those who shared his intellectual interests, as seen with Tieck and Schlegel."

Schopenhauer seemed to have lived his life in an unremitting minor key. Some would argue (and I would agree) that mutually beneficial social relationships are the most important and meaningful attainments in life. I think that the value that Epicurus places on friendship indicates that he would mostly agree. Without caring what friends think and taking their opinions seriously, I don't think that real friendship is possible.

That said, when it comes to superficial attempts to gain impersonal praise, S is entirely on the mark. I am looking straight at you, ridiculous media "influencers".
